Herding

Herding
Herding is more than a skill—it’s a partnership between dog and handler, working in perfect sync to guide and manage livestock.
The AKC Herding Program offers both tests and trials to evaluate a dog’s ability to work livestock such as ducks, sheep, or cattle.

How it Works
1
Herding Tests
Non Competitive
-
Instinct Test, Herding Test, and Pre-Trial Test
-
Conducted in a fenced arena
-
Pass/Fail format
-
Dogs must show they can move and control livestock by fetching or driving at the correct balance point
2
Herding Trials
Competitive
-
Dogs are scored based on ability, test level, course type, and livestock used
-
Three Test Levels: Started, Intermediate, Advanced
-
Three Course Types:
-
A – Versatility & control in a set arena
-
B – Movement of stock in larger areas
-
C – Tending work in unfenced areas, such as roadside or grazing flock management
-
-
Strong teamwork between handler and dog is essential

Bouviers in Herding
Bouviers may be in the minority in herding competitions, but they have proven time and again that they can shine. Some trainers—especially those unfamiliar with the breed—may chuckle at the idea of a “big, hairy beast” in the arena. Yet, Bouviers have proudly silenced the doubters, earning High in Trial and Reserve High in Trial ribbons in national events. The success of Always Bouviers in the field is a testament to their intelligence, heart, and the deep bond they share with their handlers.

Dutch Proves Bouvs Are Jacks of All Trades
Dutch Treat ADBFC’s 1994 Cover Boy” is not just another pretty face. At that time, he promised his fans a well-rounded
portfolio–a Bouvier to be proud of. He has now attained his conformation championship, received his CGC and then his CD in three consecutive shows and earned his PT herding title easily with his buddy, Jerry Rowe, and has still found time to participate in Denver’s Lutheran Hospital Pet Therapy Program as a volunteer therapy dog. Dutch would like for me to share with you a story of his Bouvier ‘feats’ in the herding ring.
